How We Move a Grand Piano: Step-by-Step
The Grand Piano Moving Process
Step 1: Preparation & Keyboard Inspection
We assess your piano (size, weight, route through home) and check all keys to document existing condition (protects both of us!). Keyboard is closed and locked to prevent damage. We measure doorways, plan the route, and prepare all equipment (piano board, dollies, blankets, tools). Planning prevents problems - grand pianos are 500-1,200 lbs and require precision.
Step 2: Wrap & Prop for Disassembly
We wrap the piano body with thick moving blankets and secure with stretch wrap, adding cardboard corner protection if needed. Then we prop the lyre (pedal assembly) up with a blanket for support and carefully remove the first leg. Piano remains upright on two legs plus the lyre prop - stable and controlled.
Step 3: Tilt onto Piano Board & Remove Lyre/Legs
We carefully tilt the piano onto its side and position it onto our heavy-duty piano board. Now horizontal and secure, we remove the lyre (wrap separately, hardware together) and then remove the remaining two legs. All three legs wrapped, hardware organized and labeled. Piano is now on the board, ready for transport.
Step 4: Secure & Mobilize
Complete blanket wrapping around the piano, then secure the entire unit to the piano board with heavy-duty straps (multiple strap points). Piano and board are now one secure, movable unit. We place this onto a 4-wheel dolly - now we can maneuver smoothly through your home.
Step 5: Navigate & Load
Roll on dolly to truck (up ramp or lift gate) for easy exits. Stairs? We remove from dolly, place blanket underneath, and multiple strong movers (4-5 for grands) lift together - one step at a time with clear communication. Piano board provides stability. Slow, controlled, professional. Once in truck, we strap securely to walls and position to prevent shifting.
Step 6: Transport & Deliver
Careful, smooth driving (your piano is precious cargo!). At your new home, we reverse the entire process - unload, navigate into home (stairs if needed with same team-lift method), position in your designated room with floor protection already down.
Step 7: Reassemble & Final Setup
We reattach all three legs (1, 2, 3), reattach the lyre/pedal assembly, unwrap carefully, and position exactly where you want it. Piano is leveled, inspected together, and ready for a tuner to visit in 2-4 weeks (we can recommend local OKC piano tuners!). Your grand piano, safely in its new home. Professional service from start to finish - typically 3-6 hours depending on complexity.

"Derrick & Jaquez, along with Cameron, the owner, were all we could have asked for - very conscientious & took great care with our furniture, as well as protecting door facings they were moving furniture through. We have a lot of antiques & really bulky items. They worked steadily & hard the whole time & everything arrived in perfect condition."

Piano Moving Tips
Gun Ownership in Oklahoma
Before We Arrive
Preparation:
- Clear pathway from piano to exit (remove obstacles)
- Measure doorways and confirm piano fits
- Remove any items on top of piano
- Close and lock keyboard lid
- Take photos (document current condition)
- Have destination location ready (where will piano go in new home?)
Don't Do This:
- Don't try to move it yourself first
- Don't slide it across floors (damages floors AND piano)
- Don't attempt stairs yourself (serious injury risk)
- Don't remove legs yourself (let professionals handle it)
Piano Placement at New Home
Where to Place Your Piano:
Good Locations:
- Against interior walls (more temperature stable)
- Away from direct sunlight (fades finish, affects tuning)
- Away from heating vents and AC vents
- Dry, climate-controlled rooms
- Level floors
Avoid:
- Exterior walls (temperature fluctuations)
- Near windows (sunlight damage)
- Basements (unless climate-controlled)
- Garages or unheated spaces
- High-humidity areas
After the Move
Next Steps:
1. Let It Acclimate: Allow piano to adjust to new environment (24-48 hours)
2. Schedule Tuning: Contact piano tuner 2-4 weeks after move
3. Check Level: Verify piano is level (affects tone and mechanics)
4. Inspect: Look for any damage (rare with our service!)
5. Enjoy:
Start playing in your new home!
Why Hire Professional Piano Movers
The Stakes Are High
Consider:
- Your piano cost: $3,000-$100,000+
